The Craft

How we read
the dawn sky

01

Clouds are not the enemy

A clear sky at dawn is often flat and pale. No drama, no colour. The fires happen when broken clouds — 30 to 60 percent coverage — hang low enough to catch the first light from below the horizon. We read cloud layers separately: high clouds paint the canvas, low clouds block the light. The score rewards the sweet spot.

02

Moisture shapes colour

Low humidity means crisp, saturated reds and golds. High humidity scatters and mutes. The same sky looks washed out through humid air. We factor atmospheric moisture alongside cloud cover, because both determine what your sensor actually captures.

03

Every beach is different

Marina's 13 kilometre flat expanse reads differently to Covelong's rock formations. The same cloud pattern calls for different compositions, different timing, different focal lengths. Our photography guidance is specific to your beach, not generic sunrise advice.

04

The ten minutes before sunrise

Most photographers arrive at sunrise. The professionals arrive earlier. The sky's most dramatic colours appear in the window before the sun clears the horizon, the civil twilight. We mark this window precisely for tomorrow's exact sunrise time at your beach.

Your Mornings

We read the sky. You were there.

Every forecast is a prediction. Your photos are the proof. Share what you saw — the ones that stop us get featured.

Send us the sunrise

You set the alarm. You made the drive. You stood at the water's edge while the city slept. If you captured that moment, we want to see it.

The best submissions are featured on this page and shared with every subscriber. Your morning, seen by everyone who almost slept through theirs.

Was it worth the alarm?

We score the sky at 4 AM. You see it at 6. Tell us if we got it right — your honesty is what makes this forecast sharper, every single day.

Seaside Beacon is young, built by one person, fuelled by early mornings and an honest obsession with getting the sky right. We launched with four Chennai beaches and a simple promise: no one should waste a 5 AM alarm on a grey horizon.

We know we won't nail every forecast. Some mornings the atmosphere does something no model predicted. Some mornings we'll say Skip and the sky will prove us wrong. That's the nature of reading weather, it sometimes humbles you. But every single data point makes the next prediction sharper, and that's where you come in.

If you woke up to a sunrise worth remembering, send us the photo. If we told you to go and it was breathtaking, we want to see it through your eyes. If we told you to skip and you went anyway and it was incredible, we definitely want to know. Your photos become part of this project. The best ones get featured right here on this page and shared with every subscriber.

And if we got it wrong, tell us. Honestly. No sugarcoating needed. Did we oversell a 78? Did we undersell a quiet morning that turned out to be magic? That feedback is what separates a forecast that guesses from one that learns. Every correction you send tunes the algorithm for tomorrow.

If Seaside Beacon has helped you catch even one sunrise you would have otherwise slept through, consider sharing it with someone who'd appreciate it — a photographer friend, a morning runner, someone who keeps saying they want to watch more sunrises but never knows when it's worth it. Word of mouth is how something small like us, grows into something that genuinely helps people.

This isn't a company asking for engagement. It's a builder asking for partnership. Your mornings, your honesty, your voice,
They shape what Seaside Beacon becomes.

Spread the word for us :)

The Story

One sunrise changed
Everything.

I moved to Chennai from Rajapalayam, a small town in South Tamil Nadu near Courtallam, just after the post-pandemic relaxations. New city, new pace, new life. The night before my birthday, June 13, 2023, I went out on my bike with nothing but time and curiosity. No destination. No plan. Somewhere along the ride, the roads led me to Marina Beach. It was around 5 AM.

The city felt different at that hour. Not loud. Not rushed. Just, alive in a quieter way.

I walked toward the waves and saw fishermen beginning their day pulling boats in, setting nets, preparing with focus and pride. I had never witnessed that world so closely. I remember standing there thinking: so much effort happens before sunrise, and most people never even see it. And then the sky arrived.

Pinkish blues first. Then gold. The entire horizon turned dramatic, like it was putting on a show just because it could.

It was my first ever sunrise, and it felt like the perfect beginning to a birthday: grounding, beautiful, and strangely emotional.

Kevin T watching his first sunrise at Marina Beach Chennai — the morning that inspired Seaside Beacon, June 13, 2023

The next weekend, I returned chasing the same moment, but the sunrise wasn't there. The sky was dull. Another day, only clouds. Some mornings came through, some didn't, and that unpredictability kept pulling me back.

So I did what I naturally do. I started learning the "why." I researched weather patterns, tracked the signals, and slowly developed a mental system, a metric-range mindset, where a few numbers could tell me whether the sunrise would be worth it.

Eventually my friends started asking me, "How do you always get it right that it'll be good tomorrow?" That question became the spark. If I could figure this out manually, why not build something that does it automatically for me, for my friends, and for anyone who just wants to witness the ocean and sky at their best?
